new year resolutions

You know how people always say rules aren't meant to be followed?

I guess new year resolutions are pretty much the same thing.

But why do we still make them?

Maybe they are a set of guidelines for a new year.

just like how the Ten Commandments are for Christians,

and dating rules are for dating people - daters?

However, to some, guidelines are just like coasters.

It'll be good if you use them.

But even if you don't, who cares?

Perhaps they are like a mark, a tradition that marks the start of a fresh, new, un-tainted year.

Like hongbaos and christmas trees.

Or, they could be a form of hope for some.

Like there is still a chance to do what we did not achieve the year before,

accomplish things we set out to do but got distracted.

New year resolutions mean different things to different people.

To me, New Year resolutions represent a form of changing perspective, a gradually maturing mind.

It goes something like this:

5 year old me

hello year 1995, please give me a puppy.

10 year old me

find a way to never have to learn chinese ever again

get a puppy

15 year old me

get mummy to know christ

adopt a puppy

18 year old me

find my direction in life

adopt a bunny

hopefully get a puppy

Yeah. Thats about that. (as you can see somethings never change)

I have no idea what to do with my life.

Sometimes i lie to myself that it is a blessing that i'm not the type of person who plans everything ahead of me.

But i know that it makes me insecure and feel disadvantaged.

So, in the year 2009, i resolve to know what i want, and work towards it.

Here i come 2009! (:
